Want a natural approach to anti-aging??

As the area of cosmetic enhancement expands, more and more people are looking for natural and non-invasive vs. synthetic and surgical cosmetic services. They want a natural healthy look opposed to a frozen, plastic appearance. Many patients also want to improve the health of their skin and are looking for a treatment that can give them fast, lasting results. So, we have added an exciting new therapy to our practice! The results are in, and patients love it.

Mesotherapy is a simple non-aggressive technique that involves micro -injections of vitamins, mineral, amino acids, and potent anti-oxidants directly into the cells of the skin. The formulas that are used are tailored to the individuals concerns, and are designed revitalize, tone, and hydrate the skin. They also stimulate the production of collagen and elastin, which makes skin appear tight, smooth and more youthful. This treatment option provides you with a safe and effective approach to cosmetic improvement. After the treatment, patients often describe their skin as radiant, fresh, firm, and bright.

There is more great news. People of all ages can have this treatment done, and it can be used as a supplement or alternative to many anti aging regimes including botox, peels, laser resurfacing, topical creams and facelifts. It can also be used to reduce fat, break down cellulite, manage pain and target specific wrinkles and creases. Most people require between 4-10 treatments, spaced 1-2 weeks apart to achieve optimal results.

Power Juice

Making fresh juice can be a great way to improve your health. With the New Year just behind us, many people want an easy way to be healthier. While we would caution against consuming only fresh juice, as it leaves out important protein and fiber, it can be a great addition to a healthy diet. For people who have trouble consuming the recommended fruits and veggies this can be a great solution. You can add the pulp back into your juice to increase its fiber content, or use it in when cooking soups, pastas and rice. Most of all it tastes great and energizes you, all that is required is a juicer.

Ingredients

1 Carrot

2 Celery Stalks

1 Green apple

1 Beet

3 Handfuls of Kale

1 Handful of parsley

1 Small piece of ginger

Directions

Wash all vegetables thoroughly. Insert into to juicer one at a time. Stir and enjoy! Note it is best to consume the fresh juice as soon as you make it, as air exposure can decrease its nutrient content.

Looking to lose weight this new year??

Personal trainer extraordinaire Ben Clarfield of Reach Personal Training in Toronto has graciously shared with us his top 10 tips for fat loss. As always, consult a health care practitioner before embarking on any new health regime, whether it be intense exercise or supplementation.

Here we go:

1. Sleep 7-8 hours a day. If you have sleep issues, address them.

2. Begin your day with the meat and nut breakfast in order to set your neurotransmitters for fat loss. See http://www.charlespoliquin.com/ArticlesMultimedia/Articles/Article/270/The_Meat_and_Nut_Breakfast.aspx

3. Strength train 4 times a week. Properly done, resistance training builds muscle and raises your BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate).

4. Drink at least 3 liters of water for women and 4 for men a day to encourage the body to function optimally.

5. Supplement with high quality omega 3 fatty acids 1-1.5 grams/pound body fat.

6. Avoid the scale and get your body fat measured with calipers by the same person at the same time every week.

7. Time carbohydrates appropriately. The body is at its most insulin sensitive post workout.

8. Avoid dairy and gluten. Both are common causes of inflammation and food sensitivities, which leads to fat storage.

9. Eat good fats like coconut oil, organic butter and extra virgin olive oil.

10. Supplement with high quality magnesium chelates to improve sleep and blood sugar.

Ben Clarfield is the founder and the owner of Reach Personal Training. As the head trainer, Ben believes that achieving goals is dependent on both physical and mental strength. He helps his clients lose fat, rehabilitate injuries, build muscle and improve their strength. Reach PT offers their clients the benefit of highly skilled trainers with the best equipment in an intimate and welcoming environment.

Gluten-free Cookies

Everyone deserves a little indulgence during the holiday season, even those who are gluten free. Just remember to enjoy in moderation and savor every bite!

Ingredients

1 cup coconut oil

1 1/4 cups evaporated cane juice

1/3 cup applesauce

1/2 cup cocoa powder

1 teaspoon kosher salt

2 tablespoons pure vanilla extract

1 1/2 cups gluten-free all-purpose baking flour

1/4 cup flax meal

1 teaspoon baking soda

1 1/2 teaspoons xanthan gum

1 cup chocolate chips

Directions

Preheat oven to 325 degrees F. Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper.

In a medium bowl, mix together the oil, evaporated cane juice, applesauce, cocoa powder, salt, and vanilla. In another medium bowl, whisk together the flour, flax meal, baking soda, and xanthan gum. Using a rubber spatula, carefully add the dry ingredients into the wet mixture and combine until dough is formed. Gently fold in the chocolate chips just until they are evenly distributed throughout the dough.

Using a melon-baller or tablespoon, scoop the dough onto the prepared baking sheets, spacing them 1-inch apart. Gently press each with the heel of your hand to help them spread. Bake on the center rack for 14 minutes, rotating the trays 180 degrees after 7 minutes. The cookies will be crispy on the edges and soft in the center.

Let the cookies stand on the baking sheet for 10 minutes, then transfer the cookies to a wire rack and cool completely before covering. Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.

It’s that time of year again, the holiday season is upon us. Whether you observe Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwanzaa or Eid al-Adha, the weeks to come will be filled with holiday parties, and hopefully lots of laughter and joy. One of the best things about the holiday season is that at the end of it, new years allows us to make a fresh start. It also forces us to think about our life, the changes we want to make and the goals we want to achieve. More than 51% of Canadians make resolutions. Whether it is to lose weight, manage debt, get a better job, get fit, quite smoking, or take a trip, most people have something they are striving for on January 1st. Unfortunately, 52% can’t last more than a month.Don’t be discouraged if you failed to meet your resolutions in the past. Sometimes all it takes is setting the right goal. We recommend you follow the “SMART” principal when setting your new years resolution to be sure you are successful:

S – Specific

Our goals are most easily accomplished when we know what exactly we are going after. So be specific. Instead of saying “this year I am going to go to the gym” try something like “Next week, I am going to go to the gym on

Tuesday, at 5:30, for an hour”. Chances are, you will be more likely to do it.

M – Measurable

It is better if you can measure your goal. Meaning, ask yourself what does success look like? how will it be measured? and when will it be accomplished by? If your goal is to loose weight, success might be achieving a physically fit body. It could be measured by inches lost, and giving yourself 6 months to get there will help you stay on track.

A – Accountable

On your journey towards accomplishing a goal, it is very helpful to build in accountability for yourself and, better yet, with an accountability partner. Sometimes partnering up can really help you stay on track with your goal. Having a friend, mentor, coach, or family member to encourage and support you can really keep you motivated when the going gets tough.

R – Resonant and Realistic

Resonant goals are one’s that move you forward towards your greater goal, meaning the goal that you make today, is resonant with your goal for tomorrow. For example if your goal is to save a specific amount of money in a year, cutting back on purchasing your morning coffee today might move you closer to that goal. The goal must also be realistic. If you are planning on saving more than you make, you will never achieve that goal because it is unrealistic. Making your goal resonant and realistic will break it down into manageable chunks and make you that much more likely to succeed.

T – Thrilling

We love this one! Goals that are thrilling get us excited and scared at the same time. This way we know that the goal means a lot to us when we have this visceral response. The idea is to create a goal that is so thrilling that you just want to get started in that moment! If it something you have always wanted to do, don’t waste anytime, set the goal and get going.

Most of us over-do-it in the weeks to come, leaving us with a holiday hangover, striving to be healthier, and happier in the year to come. Don’t wait. Start today and sail through the season knowing exactly what you are going for.

What is diabetes?

There are two main types of diabetes: type 1 and type 2. Let’s start with a definition of insulin. Insulin is a hormone that allows sugar to go from the bloodstream into the cells of the body. In type 1 diabetes, the body’s immune system attacks the cells that produce insulin. In type 2 diabetes, cells that respond to insulin become resistant or unresponsive to it.

So what does this mean? Diabetics who are untreated will have elevated levels of sugar in their blood. This can lead to serious health consequences. Untreated diabetes can lead to heart attacks, kidney problems, strokes and blindness.

Who is affected?

Today, more than 9 million Canadians live with diabetes or prediabetes – a condition that, if left unchecked, puts you at risk of developing type 2 diabetes. This means that nearly 1 in 4 Canadians either has diabetes or prediabetes. More than 20 people are diagnosed with the disease every hour.

What are the symptoms of diabetes?

The classic symptoms of diabetes are: increased thirst, increased hunger, and increased frequency of urination. Other common symptoms include fatigue, weight changes, eye problems, foot problems, and heart problems. Sometimes numbness and tingling can occur in limbs.

How is a diagnosis made?

Elevated blood sugar is commonly used to support a diagnosis of diabetes. Your doctor should monitor your blood sugar levels during regular screening tests or if you have risk factors, such as a family history of diabetes.

Prevention

Unlike Type 1 diabetes which is not preventable, studies have shown that type 2 diabetes can be prevented and delayed by the use of diet and lifestyle measures. Regular physical activity is one of the most powerful preventative therapies. Weight loss is also extremely important.

Treatment

The goals of treatment in diabetes include reducing insulin resistance, regulating blood sugar, achieving healthy weight, and preventing complications.
Type 1 diabetics are treated with insulin injections. Type 2 diabetics are commonly treated with medications that help decrease blood sugar levels. Like all medications, these are accompanied with possible side effects.

Naturopathic Help

There are also many naturopathic treatments for helping those living with diabetes.

From a supplement perspective, chromium as well as the herb gymnema sylvestre have both been shown to improve blood sugar levels in diabetics. Studies have shown them to be safe and effective and generally without any serious side effects.

A recent meta-analysis found that cinnamon may have a positive effect on blood sugar control as well. The researchers found that fasting blood glucose levels were lower among those who consumed cinnamon regularly. The doses of cinnamon ranged from 1 to 6 grams (between 1/4 and 1.5 teaspoons) per day for up to 4 months.

There are alot of ways to help treat Type 2 diabetes naturally. Call us to find out more and help spread the word about this growing epidemic.

Q: Can I see a naturopathic doctor at the same time as my medical doctor?

A: Definitely. Many people like the idea of having a health care team composed of different professionals. ND’s welcome the opportunity to collaborate with other health care practitioners. Naturopathic medicine rarely interferes with conventional treatments and ND’s are well trained in understanding and avoiding interactions between natural treatments and conventional prescription medicines.
