Although naturopathic services are not currently covered by OHIP, it is covered by many extended healthcare packages. Check your plan for details on “Naturopathic Coverage”. We encourage you to request that your policy include coverage on naturopathic services.
Can naturopathic doctors order blood work?
We offer a wide range of diagnostic tests, including the standard tests you might receive from your medical doctor. Although not currently covered by OHIP, any blood work that is required can be requisitioned by Puremedica through a Lifelabs location nearest you.
What is the difference between a naturopath and a homeopath?
Firstly, homeopaths are only trained in homeopathy while naturopathic doctors are trained to use homeopathy as one of many treatment options. In addition, where as homeopathic doctors are not regulated or licensed in Ontario, only those who meet stringent requirements are able to call themselves naturopathic doctors.
How are Naturopathic Doctors trained?
Naturopathic Doctors undergo a minimum of 7 years post-secondary education. A minimum of 3 years of undergraduate studies is required before entering 4 years at one of the accredited schools of naturopathic medicine. The program includes more than 4,500 hours of classroom training and 1,500 hours of supervised clinic experience. The training is similar to that of medical doctors but also includes naturopathic disciplines. The four areas of training including basic sciences, clinical disciplines, naturopathic disciplines and clinic experience. In addition, all NDs must pass two sets of board exams (NPLEX) prior to receiving licensure. After graduating, NDs must meet continuing education credits required by their provincial regulatory board on an ongoing basis.
Are Naturopathic Doctors regulated in Ontario?
Naturopathic doctors are the only regulated health professionals in the field of natural medicine in Ontario. NDs are licensed by the Board of Directors of Drugless Therapy Naturopathy (BDDT-N) and are regulated by the Drugless Practitioners Act in Ontario. What conditions do naturopathic doctors commonly treat?
Many acute and chronic conditions may benefit from naturopathic medicine. However, NDs are trained to recognize conditions which are outside their scope of practice and to refer to other health practitioners when it is appropriate to do so, including during a medical emergency.
Can I see a naturopathic doctor at the same time as my medical doctor?
Definitely. Many people like the idea of having a health care team composed of different professionals. ND’s welcome the opportunity to collaborate with other health care practitioners. Naturopathic medicine rarely interferes with conventional treatments and ND’s are well trained in understanding and avoiding interactions between natural treatments and conventional prescription medicines.
